This article will teach you how to see tire recycling fees by province and category so you can remit the program.
A tire levy is a fee, not GST, HST, PST, or QST. Shops also call it EHF, environmental fee, stewardship fee, or Quebec taxe pneu. Books → Reports → Tire Levy (EHF) lists the fee dollars and the tire quantity by province and category. The sales tax charged on that fee stays on the GST/HST report.
Steps
- Set Tax Country to Canada and click Load levy templates on Organization Settings → Tax Rates. See How to add a Canadian tire levy (EHF or taxe pneu) in Books?.
- In Books, open Reports.
- Open Tire Levy (EHF). This card shows only when Tax Country is Canada.
- Set the date range to the period you are remitting. Accrual uses the invoice date. Cash uses the customer payment date.
- Read Province, Levy, Tires, and Fee collected. Quebec small tires are the diameter 33 inches or less row. Four tires at $4.50 is $18.00 on that row.
- Tax on fee is the GST, HST, or QST calculated on the fee line. That tax is also in GST/HST & Provincial Tax. Do not remit the tax column to the tire program as if it were the levy.
- Click a levy name to see the invoices. If the table says no tire levy lines, the fees were not on those invoices. Ontario is blank in the templates because each producer sets the amount. The report shows the price you saved on the fee.
Conclusion & best practices
Say tire recycling fee or EHF on the invoice, not tax, especially in Saskatchewan and Ontario. Northwest Territories and Nunavut have no levy. Name crosswalk: What do GST, HST, PST, QST, TPS, and TVQ mean in Tire Base?.
